I went to see Despicable Me 2 a couple weeks ago and loved it so much I went back again yesterday! Me and my mom are both a little obsessed with the minions (if you're unfamiliar with the movie you can meet the minions here.) We probably got a little too excited when we saw that McDonalds happy meals had minion toys. I don't even eat meat and yet I've ordered three kids meals in the last week. I gave the food to my brother, but still...

And of course I had to dress up like a minion when I went to the movies! If theme-dressing can be considered a hobby I think it might be my favorite one ;)

I love this photo from Polly's blog! (Also: the pink coat!!! eep!)

I think this is one of the most clever ideas ever! An astroturf purse! I would love to get this and wear it with my sunny day outfit. It also reminds me of this picnic basket idea!

Pink polka dotted cat shoes. Need I say more?!

Speaking of shoes, BAIT Footwear is releasing their spring line this week and to say I'm in love would be the understatement of the year. So far the only ones I see up on the site are the pink ones, but I'm dying to get my hands on the mint and cornflower blue ones too!!

Did you see Helen Mirren dyed her hair pink? Coolest thing ever! I hope so badly that my hair turns white (or at least light grey) when I'm older so that I can dye it fun colors without all the hassle of bleach. My genetics seem to point towards having dark hair FOREVER though, darn it!

Anthropologie has a grapefruit sweater!! A grapefruit sweater! It's a little (okay, a lot!) out of my price range though so I might DIY it. I think I owe it to my undying love of grapefruit juice to own at least one piece of grapefruit clothing.

I love this print of foods from The Office! I definitely need one for my bedroom.. it would be a much subtler (and cuter!) way of paying tribute to my favorite tv show than the poster I currently have hanging up (you can see it creeping in the background of the close-up in this outfit post.) And the mixed berry yogurt will always make me smile :)

Speaking of The Office, did you see the Dunder Mifflin products at Quill? They started selling Dunder Mifflin paper last year (of course I bought a whole box!) but this year they added legal pads, post-its, markers and legal boxes! I'm so excited!!

A Ross Gellar brooch! I love it! I wish Friends would start streaming somewhere so I could watch it constantly like I do The Office and The X-Files. I have the whole series on DVD but I've gotten so spoiled by netflix instant that I hardly ever pull out my discs anymore.

Speaking of instant streaming, from Feb. 14th to Feb. 18th all of the Criterion movies on hulu are free for everyone! If you have some free time I highly recommend checking some of them out! Some of my personal favorites that they're streaming are Jules et Jim, Daisies, Elevator to the Gallows, The Seventh Seal, Stagecoach, Monsieur Verdoux, Vivre Sa Vie, La Strada, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Earrings of Madame De... and Orpheus.

This service is so cool! You upload your photographs and they turn them into a viewfinder slide, plus you get a viewfinder to.. well.. view them! I'm thinking of getting one of these made for my dad's 60th birthday in April!

My dream home would definitely have a spiral staircase, extra points if it's pink (who am I kidding, if it wasn't pink to begin with I'd probably paint it!) Honestly I think if my future home doesn't come with one of these, I'm installing one... even if it's a one story flat and the staircase is purely decorative. It just needs to be there.

Even though I've been feeling blue lately, I've been really really really enjoying my favorite tv shows and some new-to-me movies recently. Does anyone watch The Mindy Project? I loved the last episode (as a big When Harry Met Sally fan, the whole Bruno Kirby/Carrie Fischer dialogue made me crack up) and having BJ Novak for a guest star made my Office-loving heart explode with happiness. Kelly and Ryan, together again! yay!

Also, speaking of The Office, a while ago Amber recommended The Giant Mechanical Man with Jenna Fischer (Pam) and I kept putting it off because for some reason the title made me think it was an action movie (I swear I miss so many awesome things because of misconceptions like this... I guess this is what the google is for?) but I finally watched it this week and I think it might be in my top five favorite movies ever. It was just SO good and touching and sweet and incredibly relevant to my life at the moment. And so many tv people were in it -- Danny from The Mindy Project is the co-star (and he is absolutely amazing!) plus there's Harry Crane from Mad Men, Eric from That 70's Show, Marshall's boss from How I Met Your Mother and the girl who plays Stella in The Wedding Bride movie in HIMYM too! (It's kind of sad that I recognized all these people. But also a point of pride? hmm..)

Anyway, long story short -- if you like sweet, quiet movies about people who are a little lost in life you'll probably love this too. And it's on Netflix instant! And it's not an action movie.

I hope everyone on the east coast is doing okay this week! I'm typing this up and scheduling it now (Monday night) since our power has been browning out and I'm sure we're going to lose it pretty soon. I'm actually surprised it's held up this long, since it's been rainy and SUPER windy for almost 24 hours now.

If you DO have power, this is kind of a good time to watch scary movies, yes? Me and my family have been watching our favorites for the last two days while the wind is howling outside. Here are some eerie flicks I highly recommend:

+ Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) and Doctor X (1932) - Both of these movies were filmed in a two-strip technicolor that looks really, really creepy. The subject matter is spooky enough, but the murky greenish tint really adds so much scary oomph! Both star Fay Wray and Lionel Atwill and if you like classic horror (as opposed to blood-and-guts horror) they'll definitely scare your pants off!

+ The Vampire Bat (1933) - Another Lionel Atwill movie (he was in some really scary films!) that spooks me every time. I think this one is more unsettling than Dracula (even though I do love that one, too!)

+ Scream of Fear (1961) - I wrote a blog post about this one on my film blog last year, here. It's a Hammer film, so I was a little wary about watching it (I'm really not big on gore, and in my experience Hammer films usually come with buckets of it) but it's more of a psychological twisted sort of horror. Not gory but DEFINITELY scary!

+ The Innocents (1961) - Just the opening credits of this movie creeped me out so much that I had to make my brother keep me company for the rest. It's a gothic, atmospheric thriller based on The Turn of the Screw. It's one of those movies where what you *don't* see is scarier than what you do!

+ The Two Mrs. Carrolls (1947) - This is more of a murder mystery than a horror film, but it definitely has the feeling of a scary movie! And I have goosebumps just thinking about the painting they show in the film (you'll know it when you see it!) eek! Also, it has Barbara Stanwyck (my favorite actress) so that's always a plus!

+ The Body Snatcher (1945) - Halloween wouldn't be Halloween without at least one Val Lewton film, and my favorite is The Body Snatcher. This movie also proves that Boris Karloff could be pretty scary even without the Frankenstein makeup ;) Maybe even scarier.

The weather has been rather dreary lately... something that seriously hinders things when you take photos of your outfits every day lol ;p I wore this last Thursday to see Lawrence of Arabia at the movies with my parents. I usually wear dresses every day but for a four hour long movie, I thought something where I didn't have to monitor my sitting position constantly would be more suitable!

I love Lawrence of Arabia, and seeing it on the big screen was absolutely amazing. (Also, can we talk about Peter O'Toole's face? ♥!!) Since they re-released this David Lean epic for its 50th anniversary, I'm hoping and wishing that they'll do the same for Dr. Zhivago in 2015. That's one of my favorite films of all time... I have goosebumps just typing about the IDEA of seeing it at the movies! :)

Anyway, the other bad thing about all this rain is that it's delaying that super huge exciting project I've been talking about. I have pretty much everything ready to go except for photos (so now you know that whatever it is, it involves photos lol) Hopefully the weather will finally cooperate this week and I can spill the beans super soon!!! eep! :D

Last night my family and I went to see The Birds on the big screen! Naturally I dressed for the occasion ;) I wore a bird print dress, a bird necklace and a black bird in my hair!

The Birds is one of my favorite Hitchcock films, and (in my opinion) his scariest. It's always creeped me out when I watched it at home but it really scared me at the movies! I didn't expect to get so caught up in it! I actually cried during one scene. And towards the end when the birds were attacking the house, I accidentally spilled my popcorn in my lap and it startled me so much that I literally jumped in my seat! My mom and brother made fun of me all night after that ;p

I don't go to the movies very often since I prefer classic films to newer ones (and then there's also the whole issue of the outrageously expensive ticket fare... yikes!) but the few times I've gone in the last few years I've been pretty disappointed. The audience always seems to laugh at things that aren't supposed to be funny, and in general they're just a lot louder than I expect movie audiences to be. But last night was perfect! During most of the scenes you could probably hear a pin drop, everyone was so quiet. It really allowed me to enjoy the movie and get swept up in the story as opposed to being super conscious of everyone around me.

Overall it was just an exceptional experience! Did anyone else go? They're re-releasing ET, Lawrence of Arabia, Frankenstein and To Kill a Mockingbird for one night showings this fall, as well. If I can swing it, I'd love to see Lawrence of Arabia.... Peter O'Toole on the big screen? yum.

ps. I just realized looking at these pictures that the wind blew some of my hair straight up like Alfalfa. lol!

It's time for another slumber party! This coming week is the start of summer, so pretty soon I'm sure all of my yummy goodies will involve some form of popsicle or icy treat!

Is there anything better than chocolate covered fruit? I've always loved chocolate covered apples but isn't it annoying once you've eaten all the chocolate off and all you're left with is one big giant hunk of plain old apple? Well, this solves that problem. Cut them into slices first, then dip them, and the apple to chocolate ratio considerably improves! ;D More photos and recipe here!

Hitch Hike Lady is a great example of "don't judge a book by its cover." The artwork for the movie on netflix is dreadful... it looks like they just took a screencap from the film and added text over top in Microsoft Word. At first glance you'd think it's probably an incredibly cheap public domain b-movie that's better avoided, but you'd be wrong! It is so heartwarming, and it more than makes up for its budget shortfalls with a fantastic cast and super sweet script.

The film is about a British mother who decides to come to America to visit her son that she hasn't seen in years. All she knows is that he lives in a place in California called San Quentin. When her money runs out, she's forced to hitch hike her way there, with the help of a band of friends she picks up along the way. I really can't say much more or else I'd be giving it away, but let me just say that this was one of the most endearing films I've seen in a while. I highly recommend it, especially for the happy ending (and for Arthur Treacher, one of my favorite character actors) :)

You can watch it on netflix here!
